Countries experiencing severe drought tend to experience increased rates of poverty and political instability, as their citizens struggle to meet basic needs. Given erratic rainfall patterns, global agricultural policies need to be reformed. Governments and international organizations need to invest in sustainable irrigation infrastructure, as well as support research and development of crop varieties that are more resilient to drought conditions. To support food sovereignty, it is important for farmers to gain access to the right resources and technology to survive amidst these challenges. On the other hand, mitigation measures are also urgently needed. Practical integration such as crop rotation, agroforestry and water conservation should be prioritized to improve management of drought impacts. Educating farmers about sustainable agricultural practices can increase their resilience to extreme weather conditions. Global initiatives on climate change, such as the Paris Agreement, play an important role in building awareness and commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Consolidation of local and global efforts is urgently needed to overcome the impact of drought on agriculture and ensure the future prosperity of farming communities.
