The Impact of Climate Change on Global Floods

Climate change is one of the most important challenges facing humanity today. One of the most significant impacts of climate change is an increase in the frequency and intensity of global flooding. This phenomenon not only affects human life, but also threatens the ecosystem and disrupts the economy. One of the main factors in increasing flooding is rising global temperatures which cause warming of sea water. This warming causes larger volumes of water to evaporate into the atmosphere, triggering more frequent and more intense heavy rains. Meteorological data shows that several regions, especially those on the equator and tropical areas, have experienced an increase in rainfall of up to 20% in the last decade. In addition, melting ice in the Arctic and Antarctic as well as glaciers in the mountains causes sea levels to rise. According to the IPCC report, global sea levels are expected to rise between 0.3 and 1.1 meters by 2100, potentially causing inundation in coastal areas. Coastal Southeast Asia, such as Bangladesh and Vietnam, are areas particularly vulnerable to this rise, which could leave millions of people homeless. Rapid urbanization also exacerbates the impact of flooding. Many large cities in the world, such as Jakarta and Mumbai, experience difficulties in managing rainwater drainage due to uncontrolled development. Poor drainage systems and overcrowded areas are unable to drain water efficiently during heavy rains, causing waterlogging in cities and huge losses. In this case, climate change is exacerbating an already critical situation. The socio-economic impact of flooding is very serious. Casualties are increasing, and infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and homes are often badly damaged. Recovery costs are very high, and for developing countries, this could hamper already slow economic growth. Apart from that, public health is also threatened, because floods can spread waterborne diseases such as cholera and skin diseases. Mitigation efforts are very important to reduce the impact of climate change on flooding. Sustainability policies in infrastructure development, wise management of coastal areas, and the application of environmentally friendly technology are important steps. Today, more than ever, global collaboration on addressing climate change is needed to protect future generations from its worse impacts.
